Joining an outdoor-related club is a great way to meet people
and experience places you may not have found on your own. Most clubs welcome
visitors on trips or at their meetings. Check one out near you!
Tidewater Appalachian
Trail Club (TATC)
Based in the Hampton Roads, Virginia area (Norfolk, Virginia Beach,
etc.) the TATC is an active club which maintains many miles of trails
locally and in the Blue Ridge Mountains (including the AT) and offers
backpacking, hiking, camping, and other outdoors-oriented trips. They
have a diverse membership of over 500 people (including me, when I lived
in Virginia Beach).
Potomac Appalachian Trail Club
A large trail club in the Washington, D.C. area. Good info on trails
throughout the mid-Atlantic.
American Hiking Society
Dedicated to the promotion of hiking, establishing, protecting and
maintaining America's trails.
Appalachian Mountain Club
A New England trail club, probably the largest on the East Coast. They
focus on New Hampshire, but have chapters up and down the East Coast.
Details of their shuttle routes and info on AMC huts. Weather reports
for the White Mountains, places to stay, maps and photos.
KTA Hiking Club
The Keystone Trails Association of Pennsylvania. Guide to PA trails,
maps, hiking alerts and KTA member organizations.
Boy Scouts of America
Not an outdoors club, so to speak, but Scouting is what got me into
the outdoors in the first place. They still do a good job getting kids
outside.
