Alaska Highway sign

The start of the Alaska Highway, Dawson Creek, BC

The Alaska Highway officially starts at the nearby "Milepost 0" in downtown Dawson Creek. This sign, however, is much more photogenic. Behind the sign is a grain elevator typical of many you'll see in Alberta and British Columbia. This one has been converted to a tourist souvenir shop and information center. Watch out for the bus tour groups!

This photo was taken in June, 1997, on a beautifully sunny day. I've got a similar picture from a previous trip where it was overcast and raining. I'm glad I got to re-take it!

Dawson City is a nice enough little town, and home to the last McDonald's you'll see for quite a few miles (not that that's a bad thing). Be sure to fill up your gas tank.

Dawson Creek's official Web site is at http://www.dawsoncreek.ca. Don't confuse Dawson Creek with Dawson City in the Yukon!
